AB976 – A HUGE VICTORY FOR LANDLORDS

On October 10, Governor Schwarzenegger signed the first pro-landlord bill passed by the legislature in 12 years. And, this was AACSC’s AB 976 – protecting landlords from being drafted as de facto immigration police.

We herald this as a significant victory on many fronts. First, this bill reaffirms the landlords’ right to screen tenants, based on identity, credit and eviction history, previous landlord investigations, verifiable income – everything you currently check.

California’s Water: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore

At press time for the Official California Apartment Journal, Governor Schwarzenegger called a special session of the California Legislature to discuss only two issues:  health care reform and water.  Health care reform—although extremely important—probably won’t be resolved at this time.

However, California’s water is a crisis we cannot put on the back burner or ignore.  Cities around the state are mandating conservation (as well the officials must) but these water regulations could conceivably hit apartment owners very hard as happened in the 1990s.

Association Urges Yes Vote On Long Beach Measure H

Long Beach voters will have an opportunity to score a victory for property owners AND the City by voting “yes” on Measure H in the Special Election on May 1.

If passed, this measure will increase the oil production tax from 15 cents per barrel to 40 cents per barrel with the 25-cent increase dedicated to the public safety needs in the City.
