Time Flies!

“My name is Paul Bonner and, much to my pleasure, I am your newly-elected Board President for 2015.” That sentence appeared in my first President’s Message column for the January 2015 issue of the Official California Apartment Journal. My, how time flies! So read on and get an update on what the last four months have entailed for your professional staff and Board of Directors of the Apartment Association, California Southern Cities.

On Friday, January 16, your Board of Directors was sworn into office by longtime Board Member and former President, Ed Arnold, at a banquet held at the Virginia Country Club. Outgoing President Clive Graham was feted with proclamations and guest politicians honoring Clive’s many years of service to the Apartment Association, California Southern Cities. Just two weeks later, your Board of Directors returned to the Virginia Country Club for a Board Development training session with Professional Trainer Maxine Paul. During our time with Maxine, we learned the do’s and don’ts as well as the responsibilities of being a Board Member.

Three days in February found 23 members of your Board of Directors, some spouses, and Executive Director Johanna Cunningham sequestered for three days of Strategic Planning with Paul VanDolah, another professional Board Development Trainer, at the Chaparral Country Club in Palm Desert. During our time in the desert we fleshed out needed committees, set committee goals, appointed committee chairs, and departed the desert with a hard-earned sense of direction for the coming year.

March found a select group of Board of Directors meeting with Long Beach City Council Members and City Staff for one-on-one talks regarding a much anticipated Rental Housing Inspection Program that, at press time, will soon come before City Council to be voted on in the form of an ordinance. Those of us who have met with Council Members and City Staff have learned much and are pleased with the give-and-take of our meetings. We feel secure in knowing that Long Beach City Council and City Staff want what’s best for tenants and housing providers alike.

With April came our annual Sacramento Trip. Though politely referred to as a 36-Hour Event, countless hours, days, weeks, and months of planning (thank you Ron Kingston) went into preparation for our meetings with Sacramento legislators.

Seventeen AACSC members, including Executive Director Johanna Cunningham, traveled to Sacramento to lobby our State legislators. You’ll recall the four bills I discussed in my May President’s Message: SB 655 (mold), SB 364 (a resale price control measure), AB 396 (a bill that would make past criminal history a protected class), and AB 551 (the Bed Bug bill).

Not to be forgotten, our annual Golf Classic was held April 20 at the Sea Cliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. With guidance and support from Ed Arnold working with our very own Tom Heller, AACSC had its most successful golf tournament ever with some of the proceeds going to support Interval House in Long Beach.

The months ahead should prove to be no less exciting as we look forward to our annual July Summer Social at the Maya (July 23) and our annual September Trade Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. Our monthly Membership Meetings are held at the Long Beach Petroleum Club. Please come and join us. I look forward to meeting and talking with you to better understand your wants and needs as a housing provider, but most especially as one of our valued members. Hope to see you soon.
