It’s the middle of summer and time to prepare. Time to prepare for that end of summer moving rush. Time to prepare for cooler (and hopefully wetter) weather. Time to prepare for The Big One. And time to prepare professionally for your future.

School will be starting again shortly and families like to be in place before then. Have your vacant apartments ready to accommodate your new resident families. Make sure they are safe for young children, are energy and water efficient, provide the appropriate amenities for your price point, and that your community is inviting to all.

With fall and winter approaching, it’s time to have your roofs checked and repaired if necessary. Touch up damaged paint to protect your structures. Adjust your landscaping to reflect the season, remove old plants and consider replacing thirsty plants with California native varieties that are drought tolerant.

Be ready for any emergency including The Big One! Your Association’s FREE annual Trade Show and Rental Housing Expo is September 18th at the Long Beach Convention Center by the Sports Arena. This year’s theme is “Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Yes music, but most importantly, how to be ready for an earthquake or other disaster. There will be exhibitors specializing in disaster preparedness and disaster recovery.

Our great lineup of free seminars at the Expo includes talks by Dennis Block, Michael Brennan, Kari Negri, Frankie Alvarez, Tony Watson, “Rusty” Tweed, Bill Exeter, and Jim Cunningham.

We are pleased to have a new feature this year, a special luncheon with a distinguished panel of experts headed up by our special guest speaker, Dr. Lucy Jones, the seismologist and public voice for earthquake science and earthquake safety in California. She has been with the U.S. Geological Survey and a Visiting Research Associate at the Seismological Laboratory of Caltech since 1983. Order you luncheon tickets now from our website.

And as always, we will start the day with our “Saluting Our Stars” Rental Housing Awards Breakfast, honoring managers, supervisors, leasing agents, maintenance personnel and office staffs for their performance, professionalism, customer service, property knowledge and continuing education. Nominations are due by August 15th. Please contact the Association office for more details. Speaking of getting back to school, that applies to all of us in this industry, too. We have a great fall lineup of educational offerings, both on-line from the National Apartment Association and live in our classroom. We have classes leading to nationally recognized professional designations, as well as classes to keep you up to date on current trends and specific items. Please visit our website and register NOW. Classes are filling up fast.

Looking forward to seeing you at the “Rockin” Expo.
