Back to School Time!

This time of year comes all too fast for me these days. I can hardly believe that it is back to school time—already!

I was able though to enjoy a week with my kids, husband and his family at the beach in La Jolla for which I am extremely grateful. Watching the kids “show off” for their grandparents, hearing the stories from years past and making memories that will last a lifetime is something that I know I will treasure and hope that they will, too. I hope that each of you enjoyed the summer and got out into this great community of ours to enjoy and celebrate everything that Southern California has to offer. But now that August is firmly in place, I need to make sure of two things—you are ready to attend our Annual Trade Show and Awards Breakfast and that you have made your reservations for our Earthquake Lunch event with Dr. Lucy Jones.

Not only will you gain a wealth of information, you will also be leaving with some goodies from the Red Cross, inexpensive tips that you can put in place before the earthquake and the best way to walk through the first day. Be sure to bring along some friends, too. Our incredible panel of experts will answer questions, provide tips to keep you safe and provide you with resources you will need to know in order to protect you, your family and your business.

Thinking about sending our kids back to school makes me think about how valuable education is for everyone — especially industry education. We will be holding Sexual Harassment Prevention, Fair Housing, Property Management and QuickBooks classes, and introducing more Hot Topics. We are adding classes all the time and will be starting our last CAM Certification (Certified Apartment Manager) for the year.

Don’t forget to mark all the events and courses you need to stay up to date in our industry. And as always, let me know if there are any topics you would like us to pursue. The staff is here to serve and we always appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Plus, we are going to be announcing a NEW GROUP! If you are new to this industry, want more information about how to advance and want to connect with other industry professionals—then keep your eye out for our NEW Management Professionals group. This group will meet in the early afternoon, about 3:00 and listen to an industry expert who will provide insight on a variety of timely topics and then we will conclude our time together to network and meet others in the same position. Where will this take place? Well, we are going to switch it up and hit some of the local hot spots. So, if you have an idea for our first meeting, be one of the first to let me know your idea and get entered to win a Starbucks Coffee Card or a restaurant gift card. Our industry is growing and we are seeking out management professionals to provide you with a heads up and information to help you grow in the multifamily and apartment industry. Keep your eye on Facebook and our website for more information.

Another NEW group that is forming is our technology group. It is time for AACSC to begin reaching out beyond our website and Facebook and begin looking into new social media formats. If you are interested in helping us form this new group and have ideas about adding to our outreach efforts we would love to have you on board. Next, we have just recently purchased aacsc.org as our domain. What does this mean? Over the next months we will be reminding you about this change. It is a much easier domain, short and sweet, and easier for us to guide potential members to our website. But, don’t worry, we are not changing things yet, it will take time but I wanted you to be among the first to know that we will be making a change. We will keep you updated as we move to our new domain.

I would be remiss if I did not direct you to look at our Sacramento Report by Ron Kingston. There are real successes here and I want to be sure that you remain aware of everything we are doing for you and our industry. From electric vehicle charging stations, to inspections, to AB 2451 and the water sub meter bill. Be sure to read what your PAC dollars are doing to support YOU.

On a final note, we are now beginning to see, and feel, the effects of the drought. It should not be taken lightly that we need to conserve so I will be keeping an eye out for changes, restrictions and fines that may be imposed and keeping you advised throughout the month so be sure to visit our website for news on this topic, it seems to be a “fluid” and “moving” topic.
