Summer Time

Memorial Day, the unofficial beginning of the Summer Season, has passed but with all the recent heat it seems that summer has been here for a while. We hope you had a meaningful holiday and remembered all those who have gone before us who helped to make our country great and created our system of government that allows everyone the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

We here at your Association did our best to help you start your summer off right at our annual Casino Night at Party With the Ponies on May 16th at the Los Alamitos Race Course. Over 100 members attended having a great evening playing the casino games for some wonderful prizes donated by many of our Product Service Council vendor members and by your Board of Directors. And, many of you actually won some money on the horses.

With the Summer Season comes additional property improvement opportunities and necessities. This month the magazine features articles on improving your customer service, which in turn will improve your resident base.

Watch for future articles on how to improve or upgrade your building’s “curb appeal.” With the excessive heat and the ongoing drought, many exteriors have been neglected. Because many families move during the summer so they can be settled before school starts in the fall, make your property the best one in the neighborhood. Make that swimming pool area an inviting oasis for your current and future residents. Do some landscape renovations but remember to use drought toler ant plants and to adjust your irrigation system to lower your water usage (and your water bill). Without the threat of rain, it is also a good time to survey and repair your roof, parking lot, and seal up those cracks in your stucco. Get your property ready for next winter now.

There are some upcoming events to put on your calendars. The National Apartment Association’s Education Conference and Expo is in Denver, June 18 – 21. It is much more than just a “trade show.” It is education, education, great speakers, and more education.

Mid-summer brings another fun annual Association event. On July 31 we will again be holding our Summer Social at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach near the Queen Mary, where we will also be celebrating our Association’s 90th birthday. The Beach Party is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be music, food, drinks and more!

And, to close out the Summer, our Association’s FREE annual Trade Show and Rental Housing Expo is September 18th at the Long Beach Convention Center by the Sports Arena. Please mark your calendars.
