Our Drought and Helping Interval House

I usually look forward to March while I wait to see the beginnings of seed lings breaking open to reveal a long winter’s nap to show the greenery of newly formed leaves. Tiny leaves that will steadily grow into a rich canopy that fills the bare brown branches of winter. But I must admit that this year is different. Growing up in Sacramento I enjoyed going to Folsom Lake with my friends during the summer. It never even dawned on me that the lake could one day register only 12 percent capacity. I recently saw a report on the news of Folsom Lake and it was devastating to see how shallow the lake was. NO boating or swimming and relics from decades past have been unveiled on the lake floor. Nevertheless, I find myself enjoying the sun shine but hoping to hear a report that rain is on the way—lots and lots of rain. Until that time, we are being called on to conserve our use of this resource. Living with water all around us, it is hard to believe we are in the middle of a drought, but as a community and industry I think it is our duty to do all we can to support this effort. In support of these efforts, I encourage you to take time to attend two upcoming meetings that will help address this very issue of water conservation.

The first is our Membership Meeting where we will have Matthew Lyons from the Long Beach Water Department talk to us about issues surrounding the water crisis. The second is our half-day Water and Landscape Conference on April 22. During this panel discussion we will have three speakers covering different aspects of water and landscape issues and how we can change what we are currently doing to make every ounce of water count. Each of our three speakers will talk for 40-45 minutes, we will have lunch and then wrap it up with a panel discussion where you will be able to ask our speakers questions.

We are planning the event to run from 8:30-2:00 p.m. and we only have room for 30 people, so be sure to check out our Education Calendar for more details or check Facebook for updates and reserve your spot soon. This is sure to be a sell-out.

Speaking of blossoms and nice wea ther, we also need to talk about our up coming Golf Tournament. What a great event this is for our members, vendors and property managers, and a perfect way to say thank you in a relaxed and beautiful environ ment. I am currently dusting off my clubs and hitting the driving range so that I don’t totally embarrass myself—but, I am really looking forward to getting back onto a golf course to enjoy a day with you, our members.

Whether you are a golfer or not, this is a great time to relax and take pleasure in the fact that you are not only supporting AACSC but you are also supporting Interval House. The work that they do for our community is selfless and valuable. If you have ever known a person who is experiencing violence in the home, there is no greater cause than to help them get out of a degrading and negative situation. When kids are involved, the need is even more urgent. Knowing that the first five to seven years of a child’s life sets the course for how they think about relationships and handling conflict, it should shake us to the core and make us realize just how lucky we are to grow up in a positive environment with loving families.

If you have not already sponsored this event, I am going to ask you to consider becoming a table sponsor for $250. Your names will line our dinner tables and you will be acknowledged in the pro gram and on our website. Interval House has been our charity of choice for many years, and it is only through your generosity that we can continue to sup port them — so, thank you ahead of time for helping.

Along other lines, I want to welcome all of our NEW members and make sure to invite you to our New Member Orientation that will take place one hour before the March Membership Meeting at the Petroleum Club. We look forward to sharing all of the features and benefits you will enjoy as a member of AACSC and will help you get connected and involved. Call to let us know you are coming so we can be sure to have materials available for anyone who wants to attend. Yes, even if it has been awhile, you might want to stop by just to refresh your memory about all that we offer. I look forward to seeing you there.
