Jingle Bells

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All the Way — I LOVE this time of year. It never fails to amaze me when I see the generosity and love that is shared during this time of year. Whether you choose to feed the homeless, spend time with family and friends, or just hunker down next to a fire with your loved ones and enjoy a quiet evening—I believe that no matter how you decide to spend your time, you should make it special and memorable.

I, for one, will be spending time with family and counting my blessings for my children, my friends and my new found passion —AACSC. I am also grateful to the great work that the Interval House offers to women and children who are escaping a violent environment. This non-profit charity offers a safe place to begin hoping, healing and rebuilding their lives. No one deserves to live in fear, and the least of these are our children. AACSC is proud to support Interval House once again this season.

Last month I asked the membership to reengage and get involved in our Association. I received many of your responses asking what you could do and am happy to report that you are answering that call to action. As the end of the year approaches, albeit way too fast, we have a full slate of activity planned for 2014, and we will need your support. So, rest in December because we will be moving full steam ahead come January.

One thing you want to pay attention to is our education calendar. We are starting off quickly and beginning to fill our Property Management 101 and 102 programs. These classes are a GREAT gift idea for staff. If you have been in the industry for a time and want to continue your career, then you will also want to get registered for our CAM course which begins in February. What is CAM you might ask: Certified Apartment Manager—an NAA Certified course that shows you are professionally trained and serious about serving the apartment industry. All of these courses are beginning to fill, and if you sign up in December and mention that you saw my article, you will receive two benefits: (1) the December Special, 15% off cost of CAM course; and (2) the ability to split your payment for the course into three payments. Merry Christmas!

I am also proud to announce our 2014 Vendor SourceBook is now closed, and you can expect to receive it in late January. For those of you who are listed, congratulations. AACSC wants this to be the best year yet, and we will be promoting our SourceBook in the community all year long. To begin, we want to make sure that ALL of our members are using the SourceBook first for all their service needs and sharing their experiences with us. We will be sharing your experiences in the Apartment Journal, online at our web site and on Facebook. I also encourage you to order extra copies for all your properties, and when you use one of the vendors, be sure to let them know where you got their name.

I want to end by sharing a story with you that touched my heart. Growing up in Sacramento, I was very fortunate to have a mother who modeled generosity. My Aunt Margaret was an interior designer, and every year they would come to visit during the summer. My Aunt would begin going through our home redecorating and moving everything around. This happened summer after summer. One year when they left to drive back home, I saw my mother beginning to move everything back to its original spot. I asked her why she didn’t just tell my Aunt not to move things around, that you liked it just where you had it, but she replied, “But what would she do next year when she comes to visit. This way, she always has something to do.” She never got flustered, and she always thought about how the other person felt. It was a small thing, but something that has stuck with me all these years. So, when relatives come to visit this year, just think about Mary Ruth (my mom) and let the little things roll off your back. You will never know how happy it might make them. Thanks Mom—I still miss you.

Members, I hope all of your dreams come true in 2014, because you have to begin with a dream in order to get to your future. Only then can you look back and appreciate where you started — with your dream.
