Time for a New Beginning

We have some exciting news. Your Board of Directors has selected our Association's new Executive Director: Johanna M. Cunningham. Johanna comes to us with a wealth of experience, both in non-profit associations and Association management. Most recently she has been one of the founders and Executive Director of P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) and prior to that she was the Association Executive at the Placer County Association of Realtors®.

Some of you who attended our EXPO and Seminars on September 12th had the opportunity to meet and welcome her. You will find more information about her and some of her objectives and goals for our Association in her column this month. You will also have the opportunity to meet and greet her at our Annual General Membership meeting where we will elect our 2014 Board of Directors, at the Long Beach Petroleum Club on October 24th at 7 p.m. Welcome Aboard Johanna!

And speaking of the EXPO, what a great day we had at the Long Beach Convention Center. Well over 1,000 of you visited the over 120 exhibitor booths and attended the fantastic seminars given by Toni Blake, International Speaker, and one of the "Apartment All Stars"; Frankie Alvarez of Buffalo Maintenance; Kyle Kazan, CEO of Beach Front Property Management; Dennis Block, renown eviction attorney; and the panel discussion led by Gary Glucroft of The Screening Pro's, Kari Negri and Carmen Zelaya of Sky Properties, Inc., and Denise Arredondo of JLE Property Management, Inc.

The highlight of the EXPO was our annual "Saluting Our Stars" awards breakfast, where the "best of the best" were saluted for their outstanding accomplishments in our industry. All of our award winners, our exhibitors and our generous sponsors are listed elsewhere in this issue. If you were not able to attend, you missed a very useful, informative, and educational experience. Mark you calendars for our EXPO next year on Thursday, September 18, 2014.

In other news, the California Legislature has recessed for the year. All the bills affecting our industry that we either supported or worked to defeat went our way, except for one. That bill, AB 1229 authorizing mandatory price controls on newly constructed ownership and rental housing (inclusionary zoning), was passed by both the Assembly and Senate on the bare minimum number of votes needed and has been sent to Governor Brown to either sign of veto. We are working diligently to convince the Governor to veto that bill.

For a more detailed discussion of all the legislation we worked on this year, join us on October 24 at our Annual Membership Meet ing for lobbyist Ron Kingston's update. A lot of effort went into protecting your interests this year, and it takes a lot of money to be so effective. Please strongly consider a donation to our Political Action Committee. By giving to our PAC, you are helping to support your industry in this very "anti landlord"legislative environment. Please don't rely on your fellow members to carry the load for you. We all must invest in our industry's future. We can't do it without YOU!
