Summer Time

Memorial Day, the unofficial beginning of the Summer Season, has passed and summer is here. We hope you had a meaningful holiday and remembered all those who have gone before us who helped to make our country great and created our system of government that allows everyone the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Here at your Association we did our best to help you start your summer off right at our annual Casino Night at Party with the Ponies on May 17th at the Los Alamitos Race Course. About 150 members attended and had a great evening playing the casino games for some wonderful prizes donated by many of our Product Service Council vendor members and by your Board of Directors. And, a few of you all actually won some money on the horses.

With the Summer Season comes additional property improvement opportunities and necessities. Take this opportunity to upgrade your "curb appeal." Many families move during the summer so they can be settled in before school starts in the fall. Make your property the best one in the neighborhood. Make that swim ming pool area an inviting oasis for your current and future residents. Do some landscape renovations, but remember to use drought-tolerant plants and adjust your irrigation system to lower your water usage (and your water bill). Without the threat of rain, it is a good time to survey and repair your roof, park ing lot, and seal up those cracks in your stucco. Get your property ready for next winter now.

Don't forget to attend the National Apartment Association's Education Conference and Expo in San Diego, June 19 – 22. This is the largest conference in the rental housing industry, and people will be attending from all over the country.

Mid-summer brings another fun annual Association event. On July 18th we will be holding our Summer Social at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach near the Queen Mary. From 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. there will be a seminar, followed by the Beach Party from 4:30 to 7:30.

And to close out the summer, our Association's FREE annual Trade Show and Rental Housing Expo is September 12th at the Long Beach Sports Arena/Convention Center Hall C, with Toni Blake as our featured speaker. That day will begin with our annual "Saluting Our Stars" Industry Awards breakfast. Nomination criteria and forms will be available soon, so start thinking about who are your outstanding staff members. As they say at the "Oscars" it is an honor just to be nominated. But it's so much nicer to "win." Nominate them.

Have a wonderful and prosperous summer!
