What A Year!

While the year seems to have flown by, when I reflected this weekend on what has been accomplished by your Apart ment Association, what services it has provided and what great social functions we enjoyed, I realized it really was, "What a Year."

Since I just received my Association dues invoice, I also spent time thinking about what we get for those dues and jotting down some notes on the benefits we get from our organization. When I looked back at my notes, I saw there was a long list of products and services that help us run our properties more effec tively, stay on top of current legislation, keep more money in our pocket and best of all, have more fun. I must say, I was quite impres sed. Allow me a minute or two to share with you a few of the items on my list.

Classes - A team of professionals conducted series of classes on Managing People and Property, Fair Housing, Cost Effective Maintenance, Improving Your Bottom Line and a host of others.

Member Lunches - Besides enjoying spectacular views and delicious meals at the Long Beach Yacht Club, we heard indus try specialists share tips on the Uses of Social Media, provide information on ways to Protect our Privacy and even help us maneuver around the issues of dealing with Companion Pets.

Membership Meetings - Evening ses sions at the Petroleum Club were always packed with updates on City Fire Inspec tion Fees, Smoking Ordinances and Recy cl ing issues. The lively Question and Answer periods of these meetings helped us get the specific answers we couldn't have gotten anywhere else.

Monthly Magazine - Each edition of our Official California Apartment Journal (the best apartment industry magazine in the State—Bar None) is filled with columns like "Dear Maintenance Men," "Legal Corner Q & A," "Capitol Update" and our legislative advocate Ron Kingston's infor mative "Sacramento Report". Our maga zine also provides invaluable articles on How to Deal with Mold, How to Com pen sate Your Man agers and How to Untangle ADA Legislation.

Product and Management Service Councils - Wonder who to call for a compet itive apartment loan, a knowledgeable eviction lawyer or a solid property management firm? Our directory lists the Best of the Best. All experienced, all tested by our association members and all dedicated to helping you quickly resolve your management issues.

Travel Tours - Many of our members have enjoyed educational and enjoyable travel tours to China, Spain, Canary Islands, Machu Picchu, the Amazon, Normandy, the beautiful Loire Valley and Paris. All travel, accommodations, meals and tour guides combined in affordable packages. But wait, there is more!

Trade Show - "The Best in the West". That's what all the other apartment associations say. The Southern Cities Trade Show tops them all. Hundreds of attendees, dozens of exhi bitors, semi nars, demonstrations and… Saluting the Stars where we publicly and visibly honor our industry leaders. Best Property Management firms, top Maintenance Technicians and leading Admin istrative Specialists. This year we recog nized Lucille Aresco-Crowley with our Industry Award of Excellence and Gary DeLong as our Legislator of the Year.

Fun Stuff - How about a relaxing day on the links followed by a gourmet country club dinner, a first class auction of valuable items and an evening of good fun at our annual Golf Tournament? Maybe you prefer an exciting evening of cheering on the horses and trying your luck at the Monte Carlo card tables at our Party with the Ponies event. Or, best of all, kicking off the holiday season with decorated trees, lights, carolers, food and good friends at our annual Holiday Party—and knowing that all of the toys you donate will bring smiles to the many children at Interval House.

Additional Services - Low cost and thorough credit checks, competitive Workers' Compensa tion insurance and professional advice on tenant issues join the list of the many additional benefits offered by your Apartment Association.

There are many more things on my list, but you get my point.

We are fortunate that our staff of industry pros spends long hours answering your calls, organizing our events, processing credit checks and managing the Association's business. Our volunteers roll up their sleeves and help out on many of our events and functions. Our team of officers and Board members contribute their time to ensure that your Association is giving you the products, services, legislative advocacy and educational offerings you need to profitably run your business.

But, best of all has been the guidance and leadership provided by Nancy Ahlswede. She is truly a legend in her own time and is a giant in our industry. We can't thank her enough for her time, effort and total commitment to our Association.

Nancy, our members, staff, volunteers, Board members, legislators, city officials and other apartment associations all join me in wishing you a long, restful and well deserved retirement. Relax and enjoy—you have earned it. You have left a legacy that will be long remembered by all of us.
