Successfully Refer a Member and Help AACSC Grow

HELP! We need more members in order to better represent you in Sacramento. Due to the economic climate and the increase of anti-landlord bills (94 now!), the Apartment Association, California Southern Cities recognizes the need to reach out to more owners to make calls, send emails, forward faxes and, yes, even visit legislators in district offices. We need to give them real life scenarios of how their bills hurt us and our businesses.

You did a great job in helping defeat statewide rent control and other bills last year, but the increased number of bills is requiring us to ramp up our membership rolls and our PAC contributions. We are the voice of the rental housing community and we must be heard in all 54 cities/ communities in Los Angeles County as well as the halls in Sacramento.

To that end, your Board of Directors is launching a membership referral campaign. For every person/business/management company that you refer who becomes a member, your name will be entered in a monthly drawing. The winner will be randomly selected at the monthly membership meeting or event for a $50 gift certificate. Drawings will be held at the Golf Tournament in April, Petroleum Club meetings in May, June and August, Party With the Ponies in July, and Trade Show in September.

Members' names will be entered once for a regular member referral, twice for a vendor member and three times for a property management company. The number of times is based on the cost of the membership.

Here's a great way to help yourself twice— refer a member to swell our battle ranks with the legislators and maybe win a dinner out as well.

Brad Ward of Ward's Appliance has volunteered to sponsor the first drawing – a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant. We appreciate his generosity.

I would also like to thank Scott Schweer of Chase Commercial Term Lending at Chase Bank for being the first sponsor of our Lunch With Southern Cities program at the Long Beach Yacht Club. These bimonthly luncheons are growing exponentially and we have hosted nearly 275 of you this year. Mark your calendar for the next luncheon on June 12, which will focus on what's new in social networking to help owners/ managers.

With your calendar in hand, I want to encourage you to participate in our upcoming golf tourney. On April 30, we will hold our 6th Annual Golf Classic at Sea Cliff Country Club, 6501 Palm Avenue in Huntington Beach. This tournament benefits Interval House and our Income Property Owners Political Action Committee.

Interval House provides comprehensive domestic violence services in 70 different languages to individuals and families from the high risk areas of Los Angeles and Orange counties. More than 75 percent of domestic violence attacks occur in or around apartments.

Our PAC provides funding for candidates who believe in private property rights and underwrites campaigns to stop burdensome overregulations and rent control. If you don't golf, sponsor a hole or a tee box. If you don't sponsor, join us for a great banquet and fun evening (only $55 each)—everyone needs to eat dinner! See you at Sea Cliff.
